Why certificates of competency are a requirement
Certificates of competency are vital to protect the lives and safety of passengers and crew. They ensure operators have the required training and experience to resolve issues before they happen and respond quickly in case of an emergency.
Which certificate do you need to operate
Certificates of competency are like a driver’s licence to operate a vehicle. The type depends on the length of the vessel, the power of the engine and the area of operation. In some cases, the operator may need 2 — for example a deck qualification and an engine qualification.
What happens if you don’t comply
A NSW domestic commercial operator was recently convicted for operating without the required deck and engineering certificates of competency. They were fined $9,000 by the Downing Centre Local Court.
The operator was initially issued an infringement notice, which they did not pay. This resulted in AMSA enforcement action.
