AMSA’s Manager of Vessel Operations, Dr Michelle Grech, attended the Mission to Seafarers Australia’s Seafarers’ Welfare Conference, held from the 15 – 18 July, in Fremantle, Western Australia.

During the conference Michelle delivered a presentation to showcase AMSA’s ongoing work on seafarer welfare, including initiating amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) regarding the reporting of deaths at sea, and improving the reporting of modern slavery and human trafficking.

On Wednesday 17 July, Michelle chaired the quarterly Australian Seafarers’ Welfare Council (ASWC) meeting which covered updates on the review of Marine Order 11 (Living and working conditions on vessels), seafarer welfare and MLC activities undertaken by AMSA and ASWC members as well as updates on port welfare committee activity and developments.

During the meeting, representatives from Maritime New Zealand and the Canadian National Seafarers’ Welfare Board also shared updates on the work they are doing in their respective countries to support seafarer welfare.

At AMSA, seafarer welfare is a year-round priority, and events like this provide an opportunity to collaborate with government bodies and organisations across the globe to tackle issues faced by seafarers and ensure fair and appropriate working conditions.
