Navigation Act Qualifications (Engineer Officers) Exemption 2017 No 2

We issue Exemption 2017/2 under subsection 334(1) of the Navigation Act 2012.

We issue Exemption 2017/2 under subsection 334(1) of the Navigation Act 2012.

Under this exemption, if you held an:

  • Engineer class 2 certificate of competency and performed the duties of a Chief engineer before 1 April 2014, you can perform the duties of a Chief engineer without obtaining an Engineer class 1 certificate of competency. 
  • Engineer watchkeeper endorsed First engineer less than 3000kW certificate of competency and performed the duties of First engineer before 1 April 2014, you can perform the duties of First engineer without obtaining a Engineer class 1 certificate of competency. 

This applies only on a regulated Australian vessel within the Australian exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or the territorial sea of Australia.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Exemption 2, you must either:

  • Hold an Engineer class 2 certificate of competency and have served as Chief engineer on vessels with a propulsion power of greater than 3000 kW before 1 April 2014.
  • Hold an Engineer watchkeeper endorsed First engineer less than 3000 kW unlimited operational area who served as First engineer on vessels with a propulsion power of greater than 3000 kW before 1 April 2014.
