Working together to enhance maritime safety in the Torres Strait

AMSA's Safety Advisor, Desley Thompson, travelled to Torres Strait communities in February to support the Torres Strait Marine Safety Program.
A group of seven people stand indoors, smiling at the camera. Some wear uniform with logos. One person in the center holds a certificate with a fish illustration. The background has white walls, windows, and ceiling fans.

In partnership with Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ), Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR), and Queensland Police Service (QPS), the program delivered vital maritime safety education sessions across St Pauls, Kubin, Badu, and Thursday Island.

The sessions are part of a joint effort to enhance vessel and seafarer safety in the region. They covered topics like effective trip planning, safety management systems, and the importance of carrying lifesaving equipment on board. Demonstrations showcased different lifejacket and EPIRB options, how to activate a lifejacket and how to test EPIRBs.

Desley also met with local organisations including the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA), Thursday Island TAFE, Torres Strait Islander Media Association (TSIMA), Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC), and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) including Police Liaison Officers from each island.

We are proud to have a dedicated representative in the region working closely with local agencies to promote maritime safety in the Torres Strait.
