Issue 21 explores the importance of effective risk assessment, especially for high-risk tasks like working at heights and over the side. These activities need effective safety measures to prevent accidents and ensure crew well-being.

Risk assessments are a critical safety tool

In some shipboard settings, unsafe practices can become the norm. This increases the likelihood of serious incidents.

Risk assessment is an essential part of the vessel’s safety management system (SMS) under the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. Understanding risks is only the first step. It’s important to put safety measures in place to ensure safety.

Failing to properly identify risks or apply controls can limit how effective a risk assessment is. Ship operators and crew must ensure safety procedures are not just documented, but actively followed and enforced.
