The alert raises awareness on the correct use of hydrostatic release units for float-free life rafts and float-free EPIRBS.
A hydrostatic release unit is designed to automatically deploy a life raft or EPIRB in the event of a vessel sinking. Our inspectors often find hydrostatic release units are incorrectly fitted. In 2021, we issued over 100 deficiencies relating to incorrectly fitted units on life rafts and float-free EPIRBs. If your unit is not properly installed, it may not work in the event of an emergency.
