January 2025 marine incident report

A vessel encountered a rogue wave and capsized, a vessel experienced engine failure and was disabled due to flooding, and a vessel was disabled due to a fouled propellor while assisting with towing.

During January 2025, there were 110 reported marine incidents involving domestic commercial vessels. Of these, 7 were serious and one was very serious.

Monthly safety lesson

A swimmer participating in a marine wildlife interaction tour sustained a foot injury from a propeller strike when a crew member attempted to tow them alongside a tender vessel. This activity was in breach of the operations’ safety management system procedures.

Failure to follow safety management system procedures can result in potentially serious injuries.
