Where we operate

Whilst our head office is in Canberra we operate across Australia and have 19 offices, including in:

• Adelaide, South Australia
• Brisbane, Queensland
• Fremantle, Western Australia
• Melbourne, Victoria
• Sydney, New South Wales.

Organisational structure

Our organisational structure is made up of the AMSA Board, the Executive team, and 4 operational and service areas:

• Operations
• Response
• Policy and regulation
• Corporate services.

Operations

Operations is responsible for ensuring that the domestic and international shipping community in Australia is safely operating in accordance with the regulatory frameworks.

Their day-to-day activities include things like:  

• conducting shipping inspections 
• participating in regional forums to promote standards
• issuing training and maritime qualifications for crews on ships and domestic vessels. 

Response

Response provides a national search and rescue service to the maritime and aviation sectors, as well as working to prevent and combat ship-sourced pollution in the marine environment.  

This division also manages the infrastructure to support safety of navigation in Australian waters, and aviation and surface assets in support of incident response. 

Their day-to-day includes things like:  

• running our AMSA Response Centre (which operates 24x7 coordinating search and rescue)  
• maritime casualty management  
• marine pollution response operations.  

Policy and regulation

Policy and regulation maintains the regulatory framework and standards for maritime safety, navigation and marine environment protection for all vessels in Australian waters. 

Their day-to-day includes things like:  

• development and maintenance of marine orders 
• development of standards and guidance for safety and marine environment protection 
• engaging with international organisations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). 

Corporate services

Corporate Services provides support services to our organisation.  

Their functions include:  

• financial management
• human resources
• property and business services  
• performance and reporting  
• information technology and records management 
• corporate communication and stakeholder engagement.
