Focused inspection campaign – DCV towage

We will conduct a focused inspection campaign on the implementation of risk assessments in Class 2 towage operations from 21 November 2022 to 27 February 2023.

Advice to vessel owners and masters for the focused inspection campaign on the implementation of risk assessments in Class 2 towage operations.

AMSA will conduct a national focused inspection campaign (FIC) on harbour and coastal towing operations over the period 21 November 2022 to 27 February 2023.

The FIC will look at the implementation of risk assessments in Class 2 towage operations for domestic commercial vessels (DCVs), including the crew's understanding of the risk assessments.

AMSA has established the campaign in response to an issue with the monitoring and proper implementation of the safety management system risk assessments that towage operations have developed for the tasks their vessels undertake.

Inspection process

Marine inspectors will undertake this FIC in conjunction with regular DCV inspections or may conduct a standalone FIC inspection.

Where an inspector finds a deficiency in relation to the attached checklist, the inspector will discuss this with the person in charge of the DCV with a view to ensuring the vessel is brought into compliance.

Outcome of the FIC

The results of the FIC will be analysed and a report prepared. This report will be published on the AMSA website.
