Exemption 16 - Marine Safety (Traditional fishing)

An updated version of exemption 16 came into effect on 1 July 2025.  

We reissued the previous version with no policy changes.  

You do not need to apply to use this exemption.

In force 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2029.

You do not need to apply to use this exemption. 

You will need to keep all the supporting documents on board and ready to be presented to authorities if required.

What this exemption will allow you to do

Exemption 16 will allow you to perform duties without a certificate of competency on a traditional inhabitant fishing boat which is fishing for the purpose of profit or barter. 

You cannot use the vessel for any other purpose if you are operating under this exemption.

To be eligible for Exemption 16 you must be a traditional inhabitant of the area in which the specified operation is to be held.

To obtain this exemption you will need to complete the specified training courses and hold the specified certificates.
