Air search observer training

Our search and rescue modules provide background information as well as information about preparation, principles of how to conduct a search and rescue operation and how to respond to specific kinds of emergency.

ASO1 – Introduction to air search observer

This module has been developed to provide an introduction to air search observing and how to participate in air search activities.

This module investigates Australia's Search and Rescue Region (SRR). It outlines the Australian Search and Rescue (SAR) functions, roles and responsibilities under the National SAR Plan. Learners will understand who supplies the SAR resources, and the requirements of participating in the Air Search Observer Program.

ASO2 – Prepare for air search operations

This module has been developed to provide an understanding of how to prepare for air search operations.

The module provides an overview of aviation fundamentals and safety procedures when working around aircraft. Learners will understand the personal preparation and documentation required for air search operations, the stages of a search and rescue operation, and types of search patterns.

ASO3 – Conduct air search operations

This module has been developed to provide an understanding of how to conduct air search operations.

The module outlines the principles of observing and how to be an effective Air Search Observer, including using effective communication during operations. Learners will investigate the various types of targets, how to report sightings, and signaling survivors.

ASO4 – Respond to aircraft emergencies

This module has been developed to provide an understanding of how to respond to aircraft emergencies.

The module provides information for Air Search Observers on how to prepare for an emergency. This includes what to do during an emergency, the use of aircraft firefighting equipment, and emergency care.

ASO5 – Survival at sea

This module has been developed to provide an understanding of how to survive at sea.

The module provides Air Search Observers with information relevant to survival at sea including, temperature regulation of the human body, the phases of cold water immersion, and hyperthermia. Learners will investigate strategies for survival, and air search observer equipment.

ASO6 – Conduct post operation activities

This module has been developed to provide an understanding of how to conduct post operation activities.

This module outlines factors in departing the aircraft safely. Learners will learn procedures for returning equipment, participating in an operational debrief, and completing debriefing documentation.
