STCW certificates perpetual (no expiry date) and non perpetual (expire on 31/12/16)

An important change for STCW certificate holders - your perpetual certificate is no longer perpetual.

Background

Based on the Manila Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978, as amended (STCW), it has become a requirement that seafarers demonstrate continued competency by undertaking refresher training for a range of certificates.

As a result, thousands of Australian seafarer STCW certificates will expire on 31 December 2016.

This includes perpetual certificates and certificates where seafarers have not met revalidation requirements.

What does this mean?

  • Your perpetual certificates will now expire on 31 December, 2016
  • Your Certificate of Competency may expire on 31 December, 2016
  • You must revalidate your certificates by:
    1. Sea service and AMSA approved refresher training
      OR
    2. If you do not have the minimum sea service, you must complete the full STCW courses relevant to your certificate
