We work together at AMSA to enhance the safety of shipping and seafarers, to protect the marine environment, and to coordinate maritime and aviation search and rescue services.

How do I apply for a job with AMSA?

To apply for a job with AMSA you will be required to submit your resume and a brief summary (maximum 500 words) addressing the prerequisites for the role and outlining how your skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications makes you the best person for the job.

Prerequisites and required capabilities

The position description for a vacancy will outline the selection criteria, responsibilities and required capabilities for the job.

In your application, you must address:

  • The prerequisites. These are the ‘must have’ qualifications, experience or skills for a particular role which you need to demonstrate in your application. You will need to provide a summary (maximum of 500 words) of how you meet the prerequisites and why you are the best person for the job.
  • The required capabilities. These are a set of behaviours which are important to the role. For each capability, there are sub points to help you understand the meaning. We will assess the required capabilities at any interview granted.

Submitting your application

We have an online application process which you can find on our Current Vacancies page.

New users will need to register with the online application system. When you have completed your application you can upload it along with your resume.  Once you have submitted your application you can no longer edit it.

Closing dates

AMSA must receive applications before or on the closing date unless the contact officer has granted an extension.

Eligibility

Applicants for on-going permanent roles at AMSA must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia who have submitted an application for Australian citizenship.

For certain roles we may accept applications from candidates who do not meet the citizenship criteria listed above, and this will be noted on the advertisement. AMSA will consider applications from non-citizens if no Australian or New Zealand citizens are found suitable for the role.

Shortlisting

The selection panel will assess applications to determine which applicants have the strongest claims to the position. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview and complete psychometric testing outlined below. AMSA will inform you via email if your application is not successful.

Interviews

Face-to-face interviews are preferred, but if this is not possible, AMSA can conduct telephone or video conference interviews. Your interview will usually last for about one hour. This gives you the opportunity to share and expand on your skills and experience that are relavent to the position you are applying for.

The interview process is structured around behavioural and technical questions. You will be asked to provide specific examples to demonstrate your capability for the role. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the role or AMSA.

Psychometric assessments

You will be required to complete a psychometric assessment as part of the selection process. An Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ) will generally be required for all roles, and provides the panel with more information about your individual style and behavioural preferences at work. You may also be asked to do a verbal or numerical reasoning test, or another type of test more relevant to the position.

The assessments provide the panel with additional perspectives on applicants, and are not pass/fail exercises. At the conclusion of the selection process, you can request feedback from the Human Resources team who can be contacted on 02 6279 5000, or email 'Careers' via the contact us page.

Referees

You will be asked to provide details of at least two referees who can comment on your recent work performance. Referees will generally be current or former managers or supervisors and will be contacted by the selection panel for feedback. You should confirm with your referees that they are willing to provide comment on your skills and work performance.

Pre-employment checks

Upon or prior to commencement you will be required to provide proof of identity, proof of Australian citizenship, and copies of your relevant qualifications. You will also be required to undergo a national police check and for certain roles, a security clearance.

Pre-employment health assessments

Successful applicants may be required to complete a health assessment prior to commencement with AMSA. This is to assess the health status of new employees and whether they are physically and/or mentally capable of performing the work which they have been employed to do.
Pre-employment health assessments will be conducted for:

  • New employees who declare a pre-existing condition that may affect their ability to competently and safely perform the work.
  • All successful applicants who will work in a known hazardous environment.

Employment with AMSA is dependent upon the findings of the health assessment aligning with the inherent job requirements of the position.

Pre-existing conditions do not preclude an applicant selected on merit, from a job if the applicant is able to perform the essential task requirements safely or if reasonable adjustments can be put in place to support the applicant to perform their duties. AMSA will consider the medical advice in relation to all aspects of employment, such as safety requirements, equal employment opportunity guidelines, disability discrimination legislation, skills, experience, qualifications and aptitude for the job.

Feedback

When the selection process has been finalised you may ask for verbal feedback about your interview performance, your Occupational Personality Questionnaire and any other test results.
